Jivamukti Yoga
Jivamukti yoga is a style of practice developed by David Life and Sharon Gannon in the 1980s. The name was derived from Sanskrit, meaning “liberation while living.” Jivamukti poses are based on traditional hatha yoga, performed at a flowing, vigorous pace—much like a vinyasa yoga practice. A typical jivamukti class will include a theme, music, and chanting.
The practice of jivamukti yoga is founded on five main principles, which are meditation, music, non-violence, devotion, and scripture. Though modern in its inception, the purpose of jivamukti yoga aligns with yoga’s traditional spiritual roots of self-realization and enlightenment. The following are some benefits to practicing jivamukti online or in a classroom setting.
