annelise piers I have a question - How does yin yoga help someone when dealing with back pain. The pain could be nagging ( more muscle related ) or could be chronic ( nerve realted)… what are some do’s and donts’ when practicing yin…

Good question Ani. Yin can be a beautiful practice in cases such as this and one needs to be mindful of what is causing the pain.

I wouldn’t apply yin ‘stress’ to parts of the body that are inflamed, but would work others.
I’d focus on soothing the nervous system which also helps reduce inflammation.
In my back health sessions, I work on the feet, all the fascia of the legs, the side and upper body as well as move the spine in different directions.

So, depending on what’s ailing someone, the approach would vary. Some people need more hatha to strengthen muscles while others might need more release via yin. Always good to balance the Yin and Yang

annelise piers For those who practice Yin Yoga, what’s been the most surprising benefit you’ve seen in your teaching experience either physically or mentally?

bhagvad gita predates it about balancing the inward/outward breath. The outcome is a more balanced state of being. That state can be channelled into a higher experience or a calmer day or better relations

Anirudh I’m never surprised at the experiences my students have, but definitely in awe of how it impacts what they’re able to do off the mat: One student developed strength post years of chronic pain and fear from an accident, but recently cleared out her home and decluttered. She was ecstatic and me too!!
Another student and I worked with the visualisation tools I use on the mat to support the healing of her surgical stitches and she has been able to move more easily now…
I must reiterate, however, that yin is a complimentary practice and not a substitute for doctor’s advise/diagnosis. Based on what doctors say and prescribe, the practice can be accessed just in the mind too by tracing meridians or gentle pressure on acu points to shift Qi.
